What are some good Macintosh links

When I click on my Internet Explorer (or Netscape) icon, the dial up box does not appear. What is wrong?'

  • What happens is your web browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape,) gets out of sync with the dial up box. This usually occurs when you were on-line you had to either power down your computer or you had to restart your computer. What you have to do to get them back in sync is: In Windows 95, on the Desktop click on the "My Computer" icon. In that box, there should be an icon for dial-up networking. Click on that. Finally in that box, there should be a "BrandywineNet" connection icon. Just simply double-click on it and they should be back in sync. In Windows 98, you must re-run through the setup wizard for Microsoft Internet Explorer.

"What modem speeds does the server recognize?"

  • We recognize all v.90 (ITU Standard) 56k modems.  In some areas Bell Atlantic's equipment does not support the 56k speeds.   In order to get a 56k connection you must do the following.
1.) Make sure you have a v.90 flashed modem
2.) Make sure your phone line can handle 56k speeds -  Some areas may not
3.) Make sure you have no line noise on your modem line -  Some lines may have static and with that static your connection may be pushed to a sub 56k speed.  Call 800.275.2355 and ask them to test your line for line noise, "because you hear static".  If necessary BrandywineNet recommends having a Verizon/Bell Atlantic technican come out and check out your phone line.

"What are my DNS numbers?"

  • Your DNS numbers are as follows

Primary DNS: 207.106.54.8
Seconday DNS: 207.106.1.2

"What does it mean when it says 'Dial-up Networking could not establish a working set of protocols'?"

  • Some of your computer files that work with Dialup Networking are no longer usable.   What you need to do is reinstall them. Here is how you do it. Click on the start menu, go up to settings, to control panel. When you open up Control Panel, go to the Network icon. As soon as you double click on that icon, a window will appear. In it should say TCP/IP and Dial-up Adapter in it. Click on them and delete them by pressing the DEL or Delete button on your keyboard. After you close that program, you need to go to the Start Menu again, click on Programs, then to Accessories, then to Internet Tools, then click on Get on the Internet. From there you need to fill in all of the server information that it asks for. Make sure you go to manual setup! All the information you need should be on the sheet which you recieved from us. If you need one of these sheets because you are in this predicament go here. We reccomend you print that out just in case of a problem.

"I am intimidated by the internet!!! Where is a good place for me to start?"

  • We say the best place for a novice user of the internet to start is at any of the below locations:
    www.hotsheet.com

"What are your terms of service? What if I quit, do I get a refund?"

"I understand that a web page comes with my access. How can I build one???"

  • Most people build websites for their personal use. These are the sites on our server. Check them out for ideas. To make a site, you need to find a website editor. They can be found all over the internet. One site that has a lot of them is www.downloads.com. We recommend Microsoft Front Page. It is for a serious web page builder. To upload your file, you need to send the files by an File Transfer Protocol or FTP for short.

"What is  FTP?"

  • FTP is an acronym for File Transfer Protocol. You can use programs called FTP clients to upload and download files from various servers. There are MANY popular FTP utilities available. One of our favorites is: FTP Explorer.  FTP Explorer provides a user interface similar to the Windows Explorer with full Windows 9x capabilities, including drag and drop support for downloading and uploading files, shortcuts, multi-threading of transfers, and a consistent Windows 9x interface. Another popular FTP client we recommend is CuteFTP. CuteFTP allows novice users to utilize the capabilities of FTP without having to know all the details of the protocol itself. This link is very busy!
  • A good place to find FTP utilities is: www.downloads.com
